Alberto Segre, PhD
Professor Alberto Maria Segre is the Gerard P.Weeg Faculty Scholar in Informatics at the University of Iowa’s Computer Science Department. Originally trained in artificial intelligence and machine learning, his research interests subsequently evolved to focus on distributed algorithms for discrete optimization problems from operations research and a wide range of other application areas, including, e.g., distributed systems and algorithms for computational biology. He has supervised data management and curation for large multisite clinical studies, proposed a cryptographic blinding protocol for privacy-preserving operations on multiple data sets, and has made significant contributions to the design and development of a new distributed genetic linkage analysis system. Most recently, he is the co-founder and co-director (with Professor Phil Polgreen of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine) of the Computational Epidemiology Research Group (CompEpi), an interdisciplinary team working on problems in computational epidemiology, including surveillance problems, disease diffusion modeling, and computational problems at the intersection of technology, medicine, and wellness.
